Hi all, I have an old pi and I would like to replace for a new one, kan I use the same sd ? or how to proceed without loosing the set-up’s
Thanks
Ricardo
You can use the same SD to keep configuration like WiFi settings, but you will have to register the device again. You can then assign the setup to that device.
Thanks, but I mean. I have a pi with a lot of set-up’s if I register a new pi with the same sd, wil I not loose all the set ups ?
Let’s say I have an pi 2 with all the set ups, I want to replaced this one for a pi 3… will I not loose everything ..I am confused. Because that would mean a lot of work.
Thanks a lot
Ricardo
You won’t lose setups. Deleting a device from your account wipes all content from that device, but the setup remains completely unchanged and can be assigned on a new device again and it will be exactly the same on that new device (see rare, easily fixable, exceptions below). You can also assign the same setup on multiple Pis at the same time and each will show the same content.
If you transfer the SD card from one Pi to another, the card will detect that in runs on different hardware (it’s seeing a new device serial) and will require you to register it as a new device. But then you can immediately assign the setup again. The new device will download all files and after a few seconds it will play exactly the same content as before.
The only exceptions are setups that explicitly have the device serial somewhere in their configuration. Most video walls have a configuration sections where you assign a device to a specific part of the output. If you switch out device hardware, you’ll have to adjust this configuration and switch out the old player serial number with the new player’s serial.
totally clear, thanks Florian for your quick response .
