Is there a trick to using only the second HDMI output on a Raspberry Pi 5? Is it even possible to use only the second HDMI?
Here’s my problem: An installed display has an HDMI plug that is to be connected to whatever output is desired. In our case, that is going to be info-beamer output from a Pi5. But the plug is full size. So we have an adapter plug, with a full-size HDMI female on one side, micro-HDMI male on the other.
Sadly, the adapter is too wide to allow both the adapter and the power to be plugged in at the same time if using HDMI1. The obvious solution is to plug the HDMI into HDMI2 instead; then there is plenty of room.
There is no way to tell the Pi5 to use just HDMI2. I tried the “1/2 (clone)” setting, but no output appears on the connected display.
I guess I could use an adapter cable instead if an adapter plug, but using the other HDMI seems like a nicer solution if it can be made to work…
Hopefully, K.
PS: An update: I found a very lo-tech solution - shaving plastic off the side of the micro-HDMI adapter plug, until there was just enough clearance for both to be plugged in to the Pi5. But I think the above is still a good question ![]()
